What Is It?

OK boys and girls, time for a pop quiz. On my Chief Peak hike a few days ago, I came across this odd structure. It stands at least 10 feet tall. It has rungs to allow someone to climb it. The capped spigot extending out the hole on the side is connected to a pipe that turns upward inside. Below the spigot, the structure sounds hollow. The structure is in a depression some 20 - 30 feet from the road near a bone dry pond. The structure is attached to three railroad ties that form a three pointed base.

So, what the heck is it? I have an idea. Let's see if you agree. Leave me a comment with what you think it is.

  1. My guess is that it's a flare pipe from an oil field.

  2. Phil,

The only problem with your answer is that the whole structure seems to be portable.

  3. This has been bugging me all day long and the worst thing is that I still have no idea what it is!

  4. Is it an alien anal probe? Ok, that was uncalled for. Sorry.

  5. Dig around the base??? I'm thinking that is not a great idea. Anal probe, while funny as heck that probably isn't it. A portable cell phone antenna? We will ask our Thanksgiving Day dinner crowd what they think it is. We'll let you know what they guessed.

Wife: I didn't see Cartman so I doubt it - HA!

Best Man: Those damn apes! HA!

MoH: I can't wait to see what you people come up with.

  9. It's one of the towers from which the government emits it's mind-controlling thought waves. The fact that you ran across it, this blog post, and all of our memories of it will disappear in a few days.

(I'd tell you what it really is, but where's the fun in that?)

  10. Minneapolis Turkey Day Get Together: It looks like the consensus in Minneapolis is a sprinkler.

GH: OK, do you REALLY know what it is or are you just pulling my leg?

  11. Yep. There's a similar one along the trail to Mt. Islip in the Angeles. The one up there is marked as DWP, and was used for measuring rain/snowfall. Like the one in your picture, it's also falling apart as it's no longer used.

  12. HA! I was right. My guess was that it was a rain gauge of some type and I was right. I was about to contact the Los Padres ranger station to confirm what it was but I don't have to now. Thanks, GH

  13. Thanks, we've all been wondering what the heck it was. A rain gauge wasn't even on our radar. I will notify all of our Mpls crowd, so let them know we were WRONG.
