A Seven Week Hiatus

I will not be posting to Homer's Travels while I'm walking the Camino.  I expect to be exhausted at the end of the day and the idea of finding a computer with internet in some small farm town along the Camino just doesn't sound appealing.  I considered posting updates on Facebook when I got the chance but the more I thought about it the less appealing it became.

I'm walking the Camino to experience a new country, a new culture, a new history, and I feel the need to be disconnected from my old world while I do this.  Hiking has always been a way for me to get away from the "world" and exchange the sounds of civilization with those of nature.  Getting away from the whole social network thing seems like a wise thing to do for the next seven weeks.

I won't be totally incommunicado as I will be sending emails to the Wife when I have the opportunity.  She will be spreading it around the family and friends.  My blog friends will have to wait a while before I get caught up on posting - think beginning of August.

The past couple of days have been filled with me being obsessed in planning for all contingencies.  Sometime Monday I realized that I just have to relax and stop making more plans - I'm all planned out.  Most of the plans I have are for things that will never happen and the things that will happen, whatever they turn out to be, will be impossible to plan for.  I just have to let it be.

So, I hope you all have a great seven weeks.  Wish me luck.

I have a plane to catch.

  1. Hope you have an absolutely amazing time. And if The Wife wants to do a guest post to let us all know how you're doing, that would be cool!

  3. HD Update: He's having a frustrating start as his backpack did not make the plane. If you're the praying sort, then St. Anthony's the man.

  6. He's starting day 10 now. He got his bag a day late, and other than a craby ankle, he's doing really well!

  7. HD Update: The cranky ankle continues and a few blisters have formed, so he's taking two days off the trail to let things heal.

    He's having a great adventure.

  8. Great to hear that he's still hanging in there, even with a cranky ankle and blisters. Probably a good idea, the taking off a couple of days. Next time you talk to him, tell him we are thinking and praying for him.

  9. HD Update: Bruce found a pilgrim health clinic and had a doctor look at his feet. I'm sure foot problems are all they deal with at the clinic. His blister is not a big deal and they gave him padding to use and a bill ... it was on the high end of ... $4.00 ... that's right four dollars. Now, that's health care!

Tomorrow he reaches the halfway point!

  10. Wow, $4.00, that's amazing! Thanks for keeping us all up to date on his adventure. How are you doing?

  11. I am doing well -- thanks for asking! I have been busy managing all the "honey do" items HD never wanted to deal with, so when he gets home the entire upstairs of the house will be painted and the fence in the back yard will be repaired. Mind you, I'm not doing any of this work, but I am directing the hired folk quite well. It's good to keep busy while he's away so I don't get weirded out by being without him.

  12. LOL, definately the way to do those things ... hire someone! I totally understand that weirded out feeling when one's away. Seven weeks is a long time, especially when that person is in a foreign country. Glad you're keeping busy and thanks for keeping us posted!

  14. HD Update: Only two days to go and he'll have finished in 35 days instead of 40 ... and he's talking about doing it AGAIN.

  15. HD Update: Tomorrow HD reaches the end of the road at Cape Finisterre, which is called the edge of the world.

He'll be home in six days.

  16. So glad he's almost done and will be home so soon! I just saw pictures of all the flooding in NE. & Iowa .. oh my word!! How close to the flooding are you?

  17. HD Update: He's finished! Now, he journies back to Santiago and then the train to Madrid with a day there and finally home.

The flooding is terrible along the Missouri and now they are releasing even more water upriver. Omaha is safe, but Council Bluffs is having a hard time. Omaha has been working day and night so that the college world series is not threatened. The new stadium is down town and only a few blocks from the river. So far, so good.
